Description:
Three crosses stand silhouetted against the sky on a cedar dotted cliff in the village of Abiquiu, New Mexico. Upon the brow of the cliff stands a small adobe building that appears to be a chapel. The Morada is recognizable as the lodge of meeting place of the Brothers of Light, known as the Penitentes. Against the adobe walls rest several large timber crosses, called "maderos," which are carried to the distant hill below during Holy Week. Sunlight strikes the plaza, washing the adobe walls in warmth and above this cliff rises a flat-topped volcanic mountain that frowns its shadowy darkness over the cedar and sage dotted foothills.
