Description:
With drum beat and singing, dancers enter in front of the circular stepped kiva in column of twos behind the banner. The highly symbolic banner has at the top of a pole some fifteen feet in length a bunch of brilliantly colored feathers. Onlookers ring the plaza, and in the background, altar mountain, Black Mesa, looms its dark basalt presence behind a modern rectangular kiva with wooden stairway. San Ildefonso was the home of the great potter, Maria, who danced here until her old age.
