When I visit my friends in the pueblos I am charmed by the soothing sound of the songs they play on their hand-carved flutes. Spirit Wind scatters seeds, clears the air, and bends the trees to new shapes. Wind is believed by the Navajo to be within the child from the moment of conception and when the child is born it is said that the Wind within it “unfolds him.” Rio Chama flows over the desert dry earth to Abiquiu Dam that lies beneath the flat-topped Pedernal Mountain.
