Description:
The center of ritual and religious life in the pueblo is the subterranean room known as a kiva, which stands in the center of the plaza. The stairway echoes the shape of the stepped mountain that looms behind the San Ildefonso Pueblo. Drummers sing as the maidens, wearing black manta dresses and turquoise painted headboards (known as tablitas) move in a column of twos in dance that is a calling to life and growth the corn from Mother Earth.
