Description:
After the songs of the Buffalo Dance at San Ildefonso Pueblo ceremonial ground have died away and all dancers have returned home, a lone figure witnesses the return of the Buffalo Spirits. They hover above the cylindrical kiva, navel-like ceremonial chamber with roof ladder that extends upward as if to invoke earth and sky together. The conical bread oven and frame of the drying rack are a major contrast to the row of rectangular adobe houses that ring the plaza. The dark form of Black Mesa altar hill echoes the stair-stepped profile of the kiva, blending the designs of human and earth together.
