Description:
The only entrance to the ceremonial Kiva is through a hole in the roof that is symbolic of the place of spiritual access to still another world deeper below. One descended into the kiva by ladder. The upper wall is structured to resemble the stepped thunderhead shape of cloud and the profile of distant mountains. The height of kiva ladders, like church steeples, can be seen from a distance and they are symbols of the ceremonial nature of the Pueblo religion that invokes earth and sky together. The fingers of approaching storm clouds reach out to move across the picture plane with imagined wind. |
