Description:
Above the pueblo of Santa Clara rise the cliffs of Puye that hold the ruins of a prehistoric Pueblo. I chose this site for the painting of the Buffalo Dance for its strong physical presence. The sacred peak of Tsi Como in the Jemez Mountain range is a powerful face as a backdrop to the horned buffalo spirits, their eagle feathers spread under the darkness of storm clouds. Two hunters disguised as buffalo follow with bows above the mortarless stone walls of Puye. The Maidens lead the buffalo to their fate in the early light of a winter’s day.
