Description:
In New Mexico the handmade crosses that mark the graves in rural areas are sometimes unpainted wood that eventually takes on a weather-beaten texture. The Territorial style wooden picket and wrought iron railings placed around graves protected them from intrusion by weeds and roving animals. Some crosses are complicated in shape and distinctive of the area where they are found. The Chama cemetery has a wide view of the San Juan Mountains in southern Colorado and the solace of open spaces and wind-swept sky.
